The artist is a dedicated walker and is inspired in particular by the rugged coast, the wetlands and the extensive, coastal dune system near his studio in Merrivale, an outer district of Warrnambool. Merrivale also has suburban, rural and industrial aspects and these too are an influence. An important group of paintings that was first exhibited in 1997 was called the 'Merrivale Suite'.
After working on paper for several years the artist returned to canvas, linen to be precise, producing mixed media pictures, including Volcanic Inscape 1 and Volcanic Inscape 2, which were derived from plein-air studies made at Tower Hill, an extinct volcanic caldera on the plains near Warrnambool. The two "inscapes" are technically complex works. Materials include acrylic, ground silica, oil pastel and pigmented ink. In 2008 Vinall began work in oils , producing a number of works including a series inspired by the ancient and beautiful, Vedic "Hymn of Creation". In the first three works of this series an abstract and atmospheric effect is maintained and in response to the recognition that our most profound and beautiful hymns and myths were sought and found in the hearts of the wise, the fourth piece, The Congregation of the Wise, features highly stylized faces, radiating out from a centre, like the petals of a flower. Flat mask-like faces are icons too in the mural Improvisation in Chroma, that was painted for Allansford Leadlight Studio and a hard-edged approach was maintained for The Forever Dragon, a work that took almost two years to complete. For these two hard-edged pictures, acrylic was the chosen medium.
