Paintings

For more than twenty years Vinall has lived in southwestern Victoria and this environment infuses his art.

The artist is a dedicated walker and is inspired in particular by the rugged coast, the wetlands and the extensive, coastal dune system near his studio in Merrivale, an outer district of Warrnambool. Merrivale also has suburban, rural and industrial aspects and these too are an influence. An important group of paintings that was first exhibited in 1987 was called the “Merrivale Suite”.

After working on paper for several years the artist has recently returned to canvas, linen to be precise, producing new mixed media works, including Volcanic Inscape 1 and Volcanic Inscape 2, which were derived from plein-air studies made at Tower Hill, an extinct, volcanic caldera on the plains near Warrnambool. The two “inscapes” are technically complex works. Materials include acrylic, ground silica, oil pastel and pigmented ink. Vinall is planning to return to oils and future projects will include a major suite of paintings based on the ancient and beautiful Vedic Hymn of Creation. These and other works will be added to this site as they are completed.
