Works on Paper
Much of Vinall’s twenty first century art has been small and on paper. In 2003 he worked only in watercolour and 2004 the artist travelled in Australia, working plein-air and using a diversity of means including gouache, oil pastel, Indian and pigmented ink and collage. Related mixtures of means were applied during a residency in Thailand in 2005. These were not preliminary studies and were exhibited as pictures in their own right; however works on paper from 2007 were preliminary to larger works on linen.
Since 2008 so much time and effort has been devoted to painting large works on canvas or board, that no substantial works on paper have been completed. Only sketchbook studies have been made.
